Say No To #AgatuMassacre
I condemn in strong terms the ongoing Agatu Massacre by fulani herdsmen.
It can be recalled that in recent times that over 200 people of Agatu origin have being massacred.
The Agatu people are one of the 9 local governments that make up the Idoma nation. The Agatu people are predominantly farmers and are bordered by neighboring Cross River, Kogi and Nassarawa States.
As a friend and brother of the Idoma nation, I find it very disturbing that the people of Agatu have suffered greatly in the hands of the fulani herdsmen.
The people of Agatu have constantly being slaughtered and maimed without anyone coming to their aid.
I find the killings barbaric, lampoonable, abominable and sacrilegious that a people in their own ancestral home are being killed and butchered by their fellow country men.
The Agatu massacre is a case for national discourse, it is a situation that needs urgent attention. The people of Agatu must not be allowed to be wiped away by the fulani herdsmen.
The people of Agatu must not be allowed to go into extinction. They deserve the right to life and right to freedom of association and cultivation of their farmlands.
The Federal government of Nigeria must speedily assist the government and people of Benue in bringing the situation to a stand still.
The Federal government must understand that if nothing is done, the killings will extend to neighboring States of Cross River and Kogi and move further to other parts of the country resulting to an uncontrollable situation that would put the nation under total unrest.
In arresting the Agatu massacre, I call on the National Assembly, to enact policies that are geared towards protecting farmlands in the nation. I also call on the Inspector general of Police, the military, and other relevant agencies of government to come together towards making sure that the Agatu killings is controlled and put to an end.
We must not pretend all is well when our people are dying everyday.
Say No To Agatu Massacre!

PDP New Media Leader Sends SOS To Police IG, Says Buhari Aide After His Life
Deji Adeyanju, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) new media leader has written an open letter to the Inspector General of Police, claiming that an ‘aide’ to President Muhammad Buhari is after his life.
Adeyanju’s letter to the IG is reproduced below:
Dear Inspector General of Police, Sir,
I write you this letter out of urgency and a genuine desire to prevent any tragedy from befalling me. I am the Director New media of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria’s main opposition political party. As a politician and an influential voice in our great country, I have come under several online attacks by members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) who support president Muhammadu Buhari. They see my criticism of the president as a sacrilege and an affront on their decision to support Buhari.
I have repeatedly said that I am entitled to my opinions at all times and owe nobody any apology for my opinions but they daily attack my views and opinions and go the extra mile to always defame and malign my name calling me all sorts of despicable names. This has resulted into a civil case of defamation instituted by me against one Japheth Omojuwa at Hight Court of the Federal capital Territory. This same Japheth who works in tandem with Segun Dada has continued to malign me. I have always ignored them because I felt they were been childish and taking politics too far until the events of yesterday, the 26th of February, 2016.
I had posted a comment on social media about the embattled former minister of Interior, Abba Moro, only for one Segun Dada who claims to be working in Aso Rock to come and start attacking me calling me all sorts of names like: murderer, cultist, etc. They have continued to defame and malign me for the past 1 and half years ever since the said Japheth made unfounded allegations against me of being a member of the Goodluck Jonathan Killer Squad, a murderer who escaped justice, a former cultist, etc. Out of maturity, I have restrained myself from responding to them since I had already sued the originator of the story, but Segun Dada will just not stop. He went on and on about the matter and said he will say all these allegations to my face. So we agreed to meet yesterday, Friday the 26th to clear issues. I went to the venue of the meeting at Sofa Lounge only to find him drunk and immediately he saw me, he flared up after I subtly told him we should talk. He pushed me away and broke a Vodka bottle to stab me,
An attempt which I succeeded in dodging. People sitting in the club gathered round and tried to collect the bottle from him but he resisted and broke about 2 other bottles and 3 glass cups in the Lounge. It took the club bouncers to restrain him and the bouncers practically carried him out of the club. He was so drunk to the extent that he removed his shirt and trouzers. When I went outside the club, he kept shouting: “Deji, I will kill you. That is a promise.” I have about 4 witnesses who heard him saying he would kill me.
I have decided to make this report to prevent him from taking my life as I have become afraid and knowing full well that he might not be acting alone, they might decide to carryout this threat. When I consider what happened three weeks ago when his accomplice, Japheth Omojuwa invaded our privacy by posting online chats from one of our PDP WhatsApp Group that are confidential and distributed same and our phone numbers to their APC thugs who kept calling me and other members of my Directotrate to threaten them. These are some of the numbers that were threatening us:
Nafiu 08186893867
Njo Njo +13013850385
Mujtaba Suleiman 08033122978
Eyitayo Oginni 08038548425

Olawale Jamiu 08099690802
Baloteli 07069615280
Shina Akinsanmi 09051143575
I am convinced in my mind that Segun Dada is capable of carrying out his death threats with the help of none state actors, some of who have already been calling us threatening us because we are criticizing president Buhari who they see as a god that cannot be criticized.
In conclusion, I wish to appeal to you to look into this matter urgently with the view of properly investigating it and offering me adequate protection from those who threaten my life. I have already reported the incident of yesterday to the police close to my house who have assured me they will act on it speedily but I still wish to put you on notice sir.
I am most obliged.

DAVID MARK WINS BENUE SOUTH SENATORIAL DISTRICT ELECTION RERUN
Senator David Mark yesterday emerged winner of the rerun election conducted in Benue South senatorial district by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The immediate past senate president and candidate of Peoples Democratic Party defeated his closest rival, Mr. Daniel Onje of All Progressives Congress after winning in five of the nine local government areas of Benue South Senatorial district.
According to the results announced by the INEC returning officer, Professor Isiaka Eneji. Mark had 18,468 votes in Otukpo, his native local government, while Onje polled 12,203. In Obadigbo LGA, Mark scored 6,844 while Onje scored 8,882. Others are Ado LGA, Mark 6,513, Onje 6,370; Agatu LGA, Mark 7,986, Onje 3,456; Okpokwu LGA, Mark 11,935, Onje 6,830; Apa LGA - Mark 9,191, Onje 4,942.
By this victory in the court-ordered rerun poll, which followed the nullification of his election by the Court of Appeal, the former senate president, who would be doing his fifth term at the upper chamber, will retain the status of Nigeria’s longest serving senator. He is also the country’s longest served senate president.
The Court of Appeal, sitting in Makurdi, had on November 28 last year nullified the election of the former senate president, upturning his confirmation last October as winner of the March 28, 2015 senatorial election by the election petitions tribunal. The appeal court also ordered a rerun of the poll within 90 days of its ruling.
Yesterday’s contest, which was held in a generally peaceful atmosphere, was a straight fight between Mark and Onje, a former students’ union leader. Mark is 68 years old, while Onje is 41. Benue South senatorial district is peopled mainly by the Idoma, and Mark and Onje are of the ethnic nationality.
Besides Benue, rerun elections were also billed to hold yesterday in Kaduna, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, Kogi, Taraba and Imo states, the first set of the 80 court-ordered elections that INEC said it was scheduled to conduct between January and March. Though, the elections for Plateau and Imo were later postponed.

APC Rejects Supreme Court Verdict on A’Ibom Governorship Poll, Calls for Probe
About a week after the Supreme Court verdict on the April 11, 2015, governorship election in Akwa Ibom State affirming Governor Udom Emmanuel of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the elected governor, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state has rejected the judgment.
Accordingly, the party has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to probe the judgment by instituting an inquiry into the various and widely held notion that the Supreme Court judgment was procured through huge financial inducements.
“We believe such enquiry is inevitable to address the possible consequences of the Supreme Court judgment which is bound to encourage resort to self-help, violence and all forms of illegality and barbarity in the quest for power.
“We believe that this purchased judgment from the Supreme Court does not reflect the president’s desire to weed corruption from our society,” the party stressed.
The position of the party was made public yesterday at the end of a one-day meeting of the elders, members and stakeholders of the party on the Supreme Court judgment of the Akwa Ibom State Governorship Election Petition Appeal.
Communique issued by the party after a rally held at Nsima Ekere field along Edet Akpan Archibong road signed by the state Chairman of the party, Dr. Amadu Attai, and Secretary, Chief Effiong Etuk ,was presented by the Publicity Secretary, Mr. Ita Awak.
“We want to put on record our utter rejection of the judgment of the Supreme Court on the PDP appeal against the victory of the APC at the Court of Appeal in the state governorship election petition.
“We believe that the judgment of the Supreme Court is devoid of reason, logic and depth. The Supreme Court judgment is a dangerous act of political advocacy that completely ignores the uncontested and overwhelming evidence of the petitioners (Umana Okon Umana and APC) at the tribunal which had held that the petitioner had proved that there was no valid election in 18 of the 31 local government areas in the state.
“The Supreme Court equally rejected the findings of the Court of Appeal that established, based on over 340 documentary evidences and 50 witnesses, that there was no valid governorship election in all of the 31 local government areas in the state on 11 April 2015.
“Some of the evidences tendered by the petitioners, on which the tribunal and Appeal Court based their decisions include: mutilation of ballot papers and result sheets; lack of collation; over voting; signing of multiple result sheets by one agent and result sheets signed by people who were not agents.
“In addition to these evidences, our candidate and party had also tendered the reports of the United States Embassy; European Union; Nigerian Civil Society organisations and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) which stated that the governorship election in the state was marred by widespread irregularities and violence.
“Alluding to these evidences of violence and irregularities, the Hon. Justice Oludotun Adebola Adefope-Okojie, in her lead judgment at the Court of Appeal had stated emphatically: ‘I chip in a word of warning. May this country never again experience the violence and thuggery found to have taken place in the state during the governorship election held on April 11, 2015. Politics should never be so desperate that lives and decorum are sacrificed on the altar of winning at all costs. The descent into almost anarchy as occurred in this case must never again be allowed to take place. The supervising body, Independent National Electorl Commission INEC is charged at all times to remain on the side of truth and never be complicit in any subversion of due process.’
“We recall that the case of signing of result sheets in many wards by one person was also well established by the Court of Appeal based on evidence.
“In Mkpat Enin Local Government Area for instance, one Jerry Akpan signed the result sheets in all the 14 wards of the local government area.
rightly held by the Court of Appeal, Akpan couldn’t have been at all the wards simultaneously to sign these documents, a clear evidence that there was no collation at the wards, as we had also presented unchallenged evidence that there was no collation at the state level.
“In the light of the facts of our case and the overwhelming evidence as upheld by both the tribunal and the Court of Appeal, we find the judgment of the Supreme Court to be weird, arbitrary and an inexplicable endorsement of violence and electoral fraud that was procured by the use of state power and resources for evil ends.
“We find it strange but instructive that on the judgment day, as soon as the Justices of the Supreme Court retired to their chamber to consider their judgment, the Senate minority leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, who is also the vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, arrived obviously on cue at 8pm with a large contingent of praise singers, and proceeded to address PDP supporters within the court premises, telling them that ‘it was all over.
“With the shout of his supporters renting the air, Akpabio caused quite a stir as he swept into the courtroom in a frenzy of banters with PDP and Udom Emmanuel’s lawyers whom he equally assured by repeated stating: “It is all over.” It was a display that totally called into question the integrity of the Supreme Court and vitiated its judgment on the Akwa Ibom governorship election petition appeal.
“Another unassailable evidence of the fraud that characterised the April 11 2015 governorship election in Akwa Ibom State is that Udom Emmanuel who was declared winner of the election had no explanation on how 437,128 accredited voters by card readers or 448, 307 accredited voters by voter’s register could validly produce 1,122,836 votes purportedly cast in the election, 996,071 of which were declared for Emmanuel.
“These were findings from certified true copies of INEC documents, which were upheld by the Court of Appeal. The case of over-voting and other irregularities were painstakingly established in 27 local government areas out of 31, with 2,982 polling units.
“In his pleadings, Emmanuel had said that he would tender incident forms to account for the excess votes, but they were nerightly held by the Court of Appeal, Akpan couldn’t have been at all the wards simultaneously to sign these documents, a clear evidence that there was no collation at the wards, as we had also presented unchallenged evidence that there was no collation at the state level.

Buhari's Aide 'Boro' Wasted N48b, Spent N157.2m on Exotic Cars - Senate Reveals
Report shows Boro spent N157.2m on armoured, other cars, N510m on 150 ex-militants to take UTME in two months

Ndubuisi Francis in Abuja
Ahead of the Senate Committee on Niger Delta’s consideration of the 2015 Status Report of the Presidential Amnesty Programme at the Senate today, senators have indicated their disapproval of the over N48 billion purportedly spent by the President Muhammadu Buhari’s coordinator of the programme, Brig-Gen. Paul Boro (rtd), since he assumed office last July.
The senators, who preferred not to be named, were particularly concerned over Boro’s purchase of official vehicles for his office for over N157 million as well as the huge sums of money purported to have been expended on the training of ex-militants between November and December last year.
The expenditure, which according to the senators, was listed in the annual status report of the Amnesty Office sent to the Senate Committees on Niger Delta and Public Procurement, have made nonsense of the federal government’s efforts at belt tightening measures, arising from the nation’s dwindling earnings from crude oil.
The annual report, which the two Senate committees would review along with the office’s 2016 budget today, said the senators, indicated that Boro who took over from Hon. Kingsley Kuku as Presidential Adviser on the Amnesty Programme under the current administration, in just five months awarded contracts worth about N48 billion.
Describing most of the contracts awarded by Boro as “mostly nebulous or frivolous”, the senators were particularly irked that at a time Buhari had castigated the National Assembly for its proposal to buy official cars for senators and members of the House of Representatives, the Amnesty Office coordinator, who is just an appointee of the president, had since acquired as his official car, an armoured Lexus LX 570 Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) with communications equipment for VIP movement.
The exotic official car was acquired from Wada Autos Limited at the princely sum of N55 million and full payment has since been made by the Amnesty Office.
“The president claims to be fighting corruption while his aides are already swimming in corruption. Can you imagine a Special Adviser using a bullet proof Lexus car worth N55 million as an official car at a time the president is trying to stop us from buying our own official cars worth about N5 million each? So what happened to the monetisation policy of the federal government?” queried an irate senator, who is a member of the Senate Committee on Niger Delta.
The report before the two Senate committees and sighted by THISDAY also indicated that Boro had further acquired for his office from Globe Motors Limited, the following cars: one Toyota Land Cruiser VX V8 at the cost of N25.85 million; four Toyota Camry 3.5L V6 cars and four Toyota Hilux 4WD buses at the total sum of N75.35 million. Globe Motors has since been paid fully the sum.
Some of the senators complained that a thorough analysis of contract documents attached to the report showed that at a time Nigeria is experiencing perhaps its worst economic downturn in recent times, Buhari’s adviser on the Niger Delta Amnesty Programme appears only concerned about awarding “frivolous” contracts.
“We expected him to restructure the budget he inherited from his predecessor at the Amnesty Office to fit into current economic realities and in line with the anti-corruption crusade of President Buhari. Unfortunately Boro is just spending recklessly,” lamented another senator who did not want to be named.
Credible sources at the Amnesty Office, however, confided in THISDAY that Boro began the contract awards in November 2015 apparently to beat the December 31 deadline for the return of unspent monies to the treasury, as stipulated by the extant financial regulations in Nigeria.
The nation’s financial regulations stipulate that unspent appropriated funds be returned to the treasury after December 31 every year. However, the federal government made exemptions for the funding of capital projects to continue till March 2016.
Latching on to the need to “empower” already trained Niger Delta ex-agitators, THISDAY sources claimed that some of the contracts did not follow established guidelines for awards.
Said a source: “In several instances, the same contractors used by the former administration of Kingsley Kuku, who already had due clearance from the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) were rushed in to handle the so-called empowerment contracts.”
According to an angry senator, the contract awards occurred in spite of the fact that several of the Amnesty Programme’s trainees in universities abroad were either stranded or had been repatriated due to their inability to meet with their financial obligations to their schools.
The senator said his investigations had revealed that under the guise that there was no money to pay the ex-militants’ tuition and in-training allowances, Boro had ordered the students in universities in the UK, United States of America, Canada, United Arab Emirates, Russia, the Philippines, Belarus and elsewhere abroad, to return to Nigeria.
“Several of them have since returned and are on the verge of being placed in Nigerian universities to continue their education. The Amnesty Office cannot afford to deploy or maintain delegates offshore anymore,” he quoted a senior official of the Education Department of the Amnesty Office as saying.
The senator said officials of the Amnesty Office told him that N510 million was paid to an institution, Westerfield Colleges, to prepare 150 students for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
This transaction, according to him, stipulated that over a period spanning just two months, Westerfield Colleges would prepare the students for the UTME organised by JAMB at a cost of N3.4 million per delegate.
“The same Boro who has been telling Nigerians that the Amnesty Office does not have money to fund the education of students abroad is the one awarding a contract worth N510 million to an institution to organise JAMB classes for fresh students. This is really very silly and embarrassing,” he said.
Even more curious, he claimed, was the fact that the payment of the N510 million by the Amnesty Office was not treated as a contract, hence no award letter was issued to Westerfield.
Rather, the senator further claimed, Boro in glaring breach of the Procurement Act and other extant financial regulations of the federal government, ordered that the payment to Westerfield be passed off as a direct payment to a school and students.
Efforts to reach Boro and his media consultant, Mr. Owei Lakemfa, failed, as neither of them responded to calls to their mobile phones. A text sent to Lakemfa’s phone was also not replied.

FG MUST SET PACE FOR ECONOMY TO GROW - OBASANJO
LAGOS — Former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, yesterday, charged the Federal Government to create enabling environment to attract private investment which is needed to grow the economy.
Also, the Senate Committee chairman on Trade and Investment, Senator Sam Egwu, charged industries within the county to operate within the laws of the land as the National Assembly was ready to make laws that would attract investment in Nigeria.
Speaking at the official opening of British American Tobacco Company Nigeria, BATN, head office in Lagos, Obasanjo said: “Government must partner with private sector to attract both local and foreign investments.
”In 1999, Nigeria emerged as a democratic nation and needs sustenance and support from private sector from within and outside its economy. A few investors were skeptical about the political and economic climate of Nigeria. The government then embarked on reforms programme and intensify calls for investment in Nigeria, bringing various investors and providing them with necessary information and government incentives and opportunity. So, BATN was among the first set of companies to take us serious and believe in the country.
“In the year 2001, BATN was the first tobacco company to sign a Memoradum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federal Grovernment which led to an investment of $150 million and the modernisation of its Zaria factory.”
He noted that the commissioning of the company’s office complex in Lagos signified continuity of business in Nigeria and it was also in the midst of the economic challenges that the company had showcased its entrepreneur mindset and had continued to play a key role in the social economy of the county, in the area of agricultural development and afrostation, corporate social responsibility, economic development partnership among others.
He pointed out that it was at such a time like this we are reminded of the importance of the role of private sector as the engine for economy growth.
In his remark, Senator Sam Egwu said: “The state of our economy today demands there is need for economic diversification to mineral resources to deliver economic growth.
“As a result, massive industrial development and expansion of existing industries must be rigorously pursuit and BATN seems to be leading in this.
“However, industries in Nigeria must operate within the laws of the country and in line with international best practices, considering the peculiarity of its products.
“As legislators, the Senate, and by extension, the National Assembly Committees on Industry, are committed to ensuring the creation of conducive environment that will enable the private sector to enhance massive industrial development in the country

Shittu, author of 13 books has also been a steadfast political loyalist of President Muhammadu Buhari. He spoke on how he will use telecommunications to move Nigeria forward in an interview. Excerpts:
By Bashir Adefaka
THE Ministry of Communications has a past. You are now in its present. How are you going to manage the present with a view to shaping a better future for the nation’s telecommunications sector?
The robust interactions between past operators in the sector and me were with a view to building on the invaluable contributions they had made to the industry. So, I can assure you that this is one industry where you necessarily cannot but have a foundation.
All those who contributed immensely in the past are being patronised to ensure that I learn from them and continue to seek their collaboration. It is not a matter of politics now. It is a matter of technology and technology has no respect for politics because knowledge is a universal thing and technology is also universal. So, I am not ignoring the past in shaping the present and the future.
Adebayo-Shittu
One of your predecessors, General Tajudeen Olanrewaju, deregulated the telecommunications sector. Are you in touch with him?
I have not been in contact with General Tajudeen Olanrewaju. If I have the opportunity of meeting him, I would appreciate it. But what I am saying is that, there is an immediate linkage between me and people like General Olanrewaju. For instance, you cannot underestimate the contributions that people like Ndukwe have made. When I met him at a recent forum I called him the grand father of Nigerian Telecommunications as it is today.
National development
These are the foundations that we are working on and, to that extent, I am one person who appreciates the contributions that people made to national development. By the grace of God I will be in good position to build on what they had laid down.
Where does the Communication Ministry under your stewardship stand in the continuing plans to diversify the economy?
In the past, oil was contributing about 90 per cent of our economy. Unfortunately, price of oil started plummeting at the international market. At the end of it we thought that agriculture would be able to fill the gap. The gestation period for investments in agriculture takes time but the telecommunications, for instance, generally will be the cash-cow if we can encourage a greater participation in it.
Therefore, my office as Minister of Communications provides me with the opportunity that one has to work on, capitalise on and develop so that we would get all the results that we need to further develop Nigeria.
In terms of affordable internet access, how far can we go?
It is still evolving and it is still developing. It is for us to convince ourselves to make things simple. A lot of people even in government in the past never appreciated the extent that telecommunications could grow a national economy and impact on general development. But, like many stakeholders have said, if Nigeria must develop, we must take technology and ICT growth more seriously than we had in the past. I am passionate about it and committed to it. I am access
KOGI STATE GOVERNOR BARS JOURNALISTS FROM COVERING THE INAUGURATION OF THE NEW DEPUTY GOVERNOR
LOKOJA – Practicing journalists in Kogi state Tuesday received the shock of their lives as armed security men attached to the government house in Lokoja prevented them from covering the inauguration of the Deputy Governor, Mr. Simeon Achuba.
Journalists, mostly from the prints who were rushing from the State House of Assembly were the deputy governor was screened, could not gain access due to the refusal of the security men to allow them in.
The security personnel who said they have an instruction from the Governor that the inauguration was not meant to be a public function, warned the journalists not to come in.
Similar incident has occurred since the assumption of duty of Bello’s administration in the state, as journalists have been barred on many occasions from carrying out their legitimate duties in covering governors’ activities.
One of the security men while exchanging arguments with journalists said ‘If the programme was meant for coverage, it would have been held at the Township Stadium”.
Several efforts by the Chairman of Correspondents’ Chapel, Mallam Ademu Idakwo to explain to the security men were rebuffed as they cracked their gun to shot if journalists did not leave the premises.
KOGI FINALLY GETS A DEPUTY GOVERNOR.
Simon Achuba was on Tuesday, sworn in as the Deputy Governor of Kogi State, in Lokoja the state capital.
Achuba filled the vacuum in the deputy governorship position after Mr James Faleke refused to be Governor Yahaya Bello’s deputy.
Last year, Achuba defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and he is a former Deputy Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly.

Court dismisses Dasuki’s application to halt trial
A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, Abuja, has dismissed an application by the immediate past National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd), seeking to stop his trial on the charges of diversion of N32bn arms fund.
Justice Husseini Baba ruled on Monday that contrary to Dasuki’s allegation, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission was not in contempt of its order granting him (Dasuki) bail on December 18, 2015.
Dasuki was re-arrested by the operatives of the Department of State Service on December 29, 2015, shortly after he met the bail conditions and was released by Kuje prison.
Dasuki had, through his motion urged the court to prohibit the EFCC from prosecuting him over an alleged “brazen” disobedience of the orders of court granting him bail.
But Justice Baba held in his ruling on Monday that since it had been confirmed that Dasuki was being held by the Department of State Service, which “is a stranger” in the case, the EFCC which is prosecuting Dasuki and his co-accused could not be said to have violated the bail order.
He ruled that the only option open to the former NSA was to file necessary suit in line with section 46 of the 1999 Constitution for the enforcement of his right to liberty.
After the Monday’s ruling, prosecuting counsel, Mr. Oluwaleke Atolagbe, asked the judge a date for trial to commence, but Dasuki’s lawyer, Mr. Ahmed Raji (SAN), urged the court to give a date long enough to enable the ex-NSA’s lawyer to “tackle the issue of the stranger”.
The judge subsequently adjourned till March 23 for trial.
Dasuki filed the motion with respect to the 19 counts of diversion of N32bn arms funds for which he is being prosecuted along with a former Director of Finance and Administration, Office of the National Security Adviser, Shuaibu Salisu.
The other co-accused are, a former General Manager, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Aminu Babakusa and two companies – Acacia Holdings Limited and Reliance Referral Hospital Limited.
The ex-NSA, through his lawyer, Mr. Joseph Daudu (SAN), has also filed the same application dated January 11, 2016, before Justice Peter Affen of the same Maitama Division of FCT High Court.
The case before Justice Affen is with respect to the 22 counts of N13bn fraud filed against him and others including a former Director of Finance and Administration in the Office of the NSA, Shuaibu Salisu, and a former Minister of State for Finance, Bashir Yuguda.
Others charged along with them are a former Governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Bafarawa, the ex-governor’s son, Sagir Attahiru, and a firm, Dalhatu Investment.
ICC mistakenly unmasks protected witnesses in Gbagbo trial
The International Criminal Court Monday apologised for an embarrassing blunder during the trial of former Cote d’Ivoire leader Laurent Gbagbo, which led to the unmasking of several protected witnesses, and ordered a formal inquiry.
“What happened on Friday afternoon… is of utmost and inexcusable gravity for which the chamber, but I would say the whole ICC, apologises,” presiding judge Cuno Tarfusser said, offering a formal apology.
“It is of such gravity that the chamber has ordered an … internal investigation in order to find out how this could have happened,” a visibly upset Tarfusser said.
He was speaking as the second full week of Gbagbo’s crimes against humanity trial began in the international tribunal based in The Hague.
On Friday the prosecutor mentioned the names of several witnesses whose identities have been ordered to be kept secret, thinking the microphones were off.
But the incident was relayed live to the public gallery, and recordings have since spread widely on social media, including YouTube.
The judge added he did not know whether Friday’s incident happened because of “recklessness, superficiality (or) stupidity,” adding he did not want to “speculate about something else.”
“We are awaiting a detailed report,” Tarfusser added.
Protecting witnesses is one of the key promises of the ICC as it seeks to bring to justice those responsible for the world’s worst crimes.
The tribunal, set up in 2002, goes to enormous lengths to shield the identities of sensitive witnesses from the public, pixellating their faces and disguising their voices. In some cases, witnesses who fear reprisals are moved to a new country and given a new identity.
The trial of Gbagbo, 70, and his firebrand youth militia leader Charles Ble Goude, 44, opened on January 28, and is set to last three to four years.
The two men have denied four charges arising out of their alleged roles in post-election violence that ravaged the West African country in 2010-11.
But on Friday prosecutor Eric MacDonald inadvertently gave the names of at least three witnesses, in a blunder which made headline news in Cote d’Ivoire.
It provoked outrage from Gbagbo’s supporters and those of his bitter rival, Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara, over the weekend.
Tarfusser urged everyone to “calm down as we don’t want to ignite anything. We just want to do our jobs as best as possible.”
He also warned that any attempt to interfere with or unmask witnesses was a criminal offence, reminding all involved “to do nothing to reveal or continue to publish… the identities of protected witnesses.”
On Wednesday, witness P547 also accidentally gave his name as he recounted how forces loyal to Gbagbo allegedly fired on unarmed protesters.
Some 3,000 people were killed after the disputed Cote d’Ivoire presidential vote in late 2010, when Gbagbo refused to cede victory to Ouattara, who was backed by international powers after snatching a narrow victory.
After the apology, Gbagbo’s trial resumed with defence lawyers continuing a cross examination of the prosecution’s first witness, known only as “P547”.
TRANSPORT MINISTER, ROTIMI AMAECHI WARNS GOVENORS AGAINST EMBARKING ON AIRPORT PROJECTS THAT ARE NOT FEASIBLE
Minister of Transport Rotimi Amaechi, has warned state governors against executing airport projects that are not economically viable.
The minister cautioned against frivolous airport projects when he spoke with newsmen in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital during his assessment visit to some of the federal projects executed by the Ogun State Government.
Amaechi, who, himself, is a former governor of Rivers State, said construction of airports by state governments should be based on the economic demand for such projects in their states.
“I believe that the construction of airports should be backed by the growth of the economy. There are some airports that are constructed just for the governors to land and take off. That won’t be the idea for me as minister of transportation.
“I’d prefer that all airports that are constructed would be backed by economic demand. And, when we look at the number, if the numbers add up…We will not discourage Ogun State if you like to construct an airport, but, we would like to advise that they should look at the economics of an airport. Governors should focus on those things that would improve on the lives of the poor, not the rich. It’s the rich people that fly plane. How many poor people know where airport is, not to talk of flying in an aircraft?”he said.
SARAKI'S CCT TRIAL SPLITS SENATE
Few days after the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal filed by Senate President Bukola Saraki challenging the constitutionality of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) to try him over alleged false assets declaration, members of the Upper Legislative Chamber were divided on his fate.
The lawmakers were split over whether or not Saraki should resign.
While two Saraki’s supporters, Senators Dino Melaye and Samuel Anyanwu, are against the agitation for his resignation, his rival, Senator Kabiru Marafa, believes that stepping down would be the right thing to do.
Melaye said Saraki was being persecuted by some people, which he failed to name. According to him, the Senate would henceforth consider the action as an attack on the institution.
He said: “What is going on is not prosecution, but persecution. I want to make it categorically clear that this is not Saraki, but the institution called Senate. This is not about the person of Saraki, but an affront to us.
“We will no longer fold our arms and watch things. We are going to handle it as an attack on the Senate. We want to assure Nigerians that this too shall pass. Anyone contemplating change in leadership is a daydreamer,” he said.
However, Marafa said he would not join issues with Senator Melaye, but rather insisted that Saraki should step aside in the interest of the Senate as well as the country. “I have said it before and I am repeating it again that Saraki must resign and face his trial. As a Nigerian, what is he supposed to do? He is supposed to resign. That is the honourable thing to do. That is what is obtainable in other parts of the world. When you are accused of something, you resign and face trial.
“Nobody said he is guilty. Even the Senate has not said he is guilty. We have been very fair to him. He has exhausted all his appeals and it is clear now that he has to face trial. As a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the honourable thing to do is to resign and face trial,” he said.
Senate committee Chairman on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, also kicked against calls for Saraki’s resignation. He said there was no leadership crisis in the Senate, hence, there was no reason for him to step aside
ETISALAT NIGERIA SUES MTN NIGERIA AND VISAFONE LTD
Etisalat Nigeria has sued MTN Nigeria and Visafone Ltd, challenging MTN’s use of the 800megahertz (MHZ) spectrum following the acquisition of Visafone.
MTN sued the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) over the imposition of N780billion fine on it by the regulator for harbouring some 5.2million pre-registered subscriber identity module (SIM) cards on its network in violation of extant rules.
Etisalat said it considered the action necessary to prevent the use of the spectrum by MTN at this time, as it will entrench the dominance of MTN in the retail data services market.
“You will recall that MTN Nigeria was declared dominant by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in 2013 and remains dominant in the wholesale leased line and retail voice markets.
“The use of the 800MHz spectrum to deploy broadband services ahead of its competitors, particularly those who prior to MTNs purchase of Visafone, held similar spectrum bands as MTN, will further entrench MTN’s dominance in the Nigerian telecommunications sector,” Etisalat said in a statement confirmed by its Head of Media, Chineze Amanfo, yesterday.

SAMBISA, LAST BATTLE GROUND FOR BOKO HARAM - DHQ
The Defence Headquarters yesterday assured Nigerians that the 80km thick bush, will be the last resting point for the insurgents. The Director of Defence Information, Brig. Gen Rabe Abubakar in an exclusive interview with journalist indulged members of the public to continue supporting the military in her fight against insurgency. He said " The situation is clear on how much we have decimated Boko Haram. Technically, we have knocked down these insurgents.
“ The insurgents have been beaten and I stand by what I said. I can beat my chest that the insurgents have been decimated.
“All these attacks on soft targets do not mean that Boko Haram insurgents are occupying any territory. They are carrying out these attacks in order to remain relevant. The insurgents are pretending to be alive when in reality they have lost out.
“The attacks on soft targets by the insurgents do not translate to occupation of territories or some parts of Borno State or the North-East.
“The insurgents’ attacks on soft targets are not peculiar to Nigeria. These terrorists do so in the U.S. France, Britain, and many countries. We are doing our best to protect these soft targets.”
Gen. Abubakar said: “What is left is Sambisa Forest. That is the last battle ground with the insurgents.
“ This Forest is about 80kilometres but I believe very soon, we will overrun the Forest and rout out the insurgents. We will certainly send them packing from the Sambisa Forest.”
“For anyone to make a claim that half of Borno State is under the insurgents is not helping the military. It is just to get media attention. We have decimated Boko Haram. This is the reality.
“We want to appeal to Nigerians to appreciate and support our gallant troops to maintain the high rate of success we have achieved in the war against the insurgents.
“This is a Nigerian war versus the insurgents. Boko Haram is a national catastrophe which requires the support of all to address. Every Nigerian must be seen to be contributing morally to the war against these insurgents. “

THE NEW BACK TO READING INITIATIVE BY GOVERNOR AYADE'S AIDE ON STUDENT AFFAIRS
Cross River State Setting Practical Initiatives Towards Evolving The Most Literate State In The Federation
There's so much work to do in repositioning our educational system in Cross River State and if we must,we must capture the rudiments early...
We must be delibrate and conscious of simple indices which will indicate success in our efforts such as this rating by the West African Examination Council...Cross River State is currently ranked 20th out of 36.
I am therefore proposing the launch of "The Project Back To Book Initiative-TPBTBI" across the state and another initiative I tag "Project Brush Me Up-PBMU".
The above projects will and is geared at evolving #CRS from it currently ranked status as educationally less developed to an educationally developed state, reignite reading culture amongst our people and particularly the future generation of our state. This is the vision of Sen Prof Ayade Benedict.
Therefore, these two initiatives are practical steps in the right direction that will involve ensuring that parents encourage their kids to read books for at least 2hours everyday, get them to use the library and educational facilities in the state, set up "brush up" centres across the three senatorial districts for in-depth tutorials and practicals on all subjects for those in JSS 3-SS2 (Three days a week-Friday,Saturday and Sunday at 3:30pm-5:30pm), provide opportunity for brush ups for those writing the computer based JAMB exams(Not every Cross Riverian writing these exams has access to the computer or may know how to use one)etc.
Volunteers for this project will be sorted openly and the best amongst them given opportunity to share knowledge with our future scientists, politicians, lawyers, lecturers and officers etc. From projections incentives will be provided to volunteers.
Partnership to make this project succeed is open to all!
Please if you are interested in sponsoring or to volunteer for the realization of this initiative reach Mr Brian on 08113250311 or Mr Ntebri on +2348038059989...Preferably please send a text either as sponsor or vo
lunteer. We will get back to you.
You will all agree with me that our reading culture is dying and there's need to resusitate same and for those who were just regular Mon-Fri students what made the bright kids bright was that extra "brush ups" after school hours.
Together we can...together we will! Service it is, service it will remain! Our immediate targets for the "brush up initiatives" are those seeking entrance into tertiary institutions, JSS3-SS2 Students.
Our goal is to ensure that in WAEC and NECO in the next 2 years we are ranked amongst the first five in the country in terms of performance and to be the most book friendly state in Nigeria.
Save your child from future harrasment and financial loss....Teach him to read now! We can! We will build an eduationally developed state and the most book/literacy friendly state in the federation!!
NB
Certain aspects of the initiative will be adjusted based on feedbacks etc. THIS IS NOT MONEY CENTERED....IT IS NOT HOW MUCH BUT HOW WORTH?
